Why We Love Rocks

River rocks are a wonderful and easy way to incorporate more earth into an environment.  The grounded energy provided by these smooth stones helps to bring peace, prosperity and abundance into an area.  Their close connection to water, which is associated with wealth, can bring about many positive changes. They are an ideal example of what can happen when water and land come together; two elements collaborating to create something beautiful, natural and auspicious.  Although referred to as river rocks, they don’t have to come directly from a river.  Any stone or rock smoothed by any form of water can suit this purpose.

To read some of the studies:

A study by U.S. researchers show that staph-infected wounds healed faster when they were treated with vapors of tea-tree oil than with conventional methods. Research published in December 2013 reported that a hand gel made with lemongrass oil was effective in reducing MRSA on the skin of human volunteers, and previous research has shown that a cleanser made with tea-tree oil clears MRSA from the skin as effectively as the standard treatments to which bacteria appear to be developing resistance. This type of simple, inexpensive fix—an essential-oil-based hand sanitizer—could be a major boost to hospitals, in particular, since MRSA infections are so common in healthcare settings.

How what you smell can change how you feel

“When you rub an essential oil into your skin, you absorb it. It ends up in your bloodstream,” Dr. Powell says. “The same thing happens when you inhale the scent. Chemicals from the herb get absorbed through tissues in your nose and lungs.”

These chemicals eventually reach your limbic system — the network of nerves in your brain that controls your instincts and emotions.

“They can alter your perception of pain and potentially improve your mood,” Dr. Powell says.

Medical studies show that aromatherapy is linked with:

  • Decreased levels of cortisol, the hormone associated with stress hormone
  • Lower heart rate
  • Less pain
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved anxiety and depression

The most challenging problem with MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is its resistance to antibiotics. A 2004 study shows promise that essential oils may thwart MRSA’s ability to mutate and resist.

Where does MRSA come from?

Most people get this infection from a hospital or clinic environment. In fact, hospitals are where this superbug emerged.

MRSA was first discovered in the UK in 1961 and in the US in 1981. MRSA became international news in the late 90sWhat was a fairly common and benign bacteria — Staphylococcus aureus — has developed into a monster, largely through the development of antibiotics and antibacterial agents employed in hospital. It’s no longer confined to hospitals, so you’ll now hear of community-acquired MRSA as opposed to HA-MRSA (hospital-acquired MRSA). Once an individual acquires this bug it remains with them for life, as there is to date no effective pharmaceutical treatment for MRSA infections.

What are the symptoms? The symptoms will depend on where the infection appears. It typically appears as a skin infection such as a boil or abscess that just doesn’t seem to heal or go away. The bug can also enter via surgical cuts or wounds. It will often be red, swollen, pus-filled and painful. It’s often mistaken for a spider bite. An MRSA skin infection can lead to what is known as cellulitis. This is where the infection spreads to the deeper levels of skin tissue and fat. The skin around the infection will turn red, hot, swollen and painful.

If it infects the lungs it can lead to pneumonia. The symptoms will be shortness of breath, chills, a worsening fever and cough. Again, like a skin infection it doesn’t appear to go way. If after 3-4 days it hasn’t gotten any better, you should definitely be getting it checked out by a medical practitioner.

In time a MRSA infection can lead to more serious and even fatal conditions such as urinary tract infection, blood poisoning, osteomyelitis and even infection of the inner lining of the heart (endocarditis). In very rare circumstances, MRSA can lead to necrotizing fasciitis — a rapidly spreading “flesh-eating” infection.

How can Essential Oils help?

Essential oils are the most likely way of fighting superbugs. For one thing they don’t have the side-effects that most antibiotics do. Second, they’re not capable of producing resistant strains of bacteria in the same way that pharmaceuticals do. And there are there reasons for the latter. First, essential oils are quite complex in their makeup (hundreds of compounds) as opposed to a couple of key ingredients in a medicine produced in a lab. Second, while every batch of a pharmaceutical drug is the same, no essential oil is ever twice the same. These two factors make it impossible for bacteria to mount an effective resistance to essential oils.

Sometimes, Staph or MRSA may not respond to a single oil. It’s best to try another type of oil, or move to a blended oil. Blends combine the benefits of several different essential oils into a single, easy to use mixture. Oils with complementary constituents or properties can be combined to target specific types of infections and work in synergistic ways. Blends can also provide secondary benefits, such as tissue healing and enhanced immune response properties.

Our Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Oil can offer superior results over single oils, as the combination creates even more complex and “broad spectrum” support against infections.

Why are essential oils so effective?

Traditionally hospitals use bacteria-killing chemicals to clean surfaces, to sterilize instruments and to de-contaminate the skin before surgery. It has been argued that these sterilizing processes inadvertently help to spread bacteria causing them to become resistant to the anti-bacterial agents.

The reason essential oils are so effective is because they are made up of a complex mixture of chemical compounds which the MRSA and other super bug bacteria find difficult to resist. The problem with current treatments is that they are made of single compounds, which MRSA relatively quickly becomes resistant to, so treatment is only successful in around 50% of cases.

‘While a wide range of products currently exist to help prevent the spread of MRSA, these are often unpleasant for patients as their application can cause skin irritation. MRSA is often carried inside the nose which means that patients often have to insert treatments up their nostrils, whereas these essential oils can simply be inhaled to prevent the patient being at risk.

Patients receiving treatment for cancer and leukemia are often left with weakened immune systems, which makes them vulnerable to infection from MRSA.

Which Essential Oils are best?

Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is a high quality oil that contains well over 100 unique chemical constituents. This oil has been the focus of many studies, articles and medical uses. It has been proven in one study superior to standard medical chlorhexidine treatments or a silver preparation for eliminating MRSA colonization (Journal of Hospital Infection (2004;56:283–6)). Tea tree is considered at safe alternative to drug therapies for treating MRSA skin infections.

Note: “Tea Tree” is a generic term which can refer to over 300 varieties of the tea tree plant. Be sure to look for “Melaleuca alternifolia“. Our Tiny Drops Tea Tree Oil is 100% Melaleauca altlernifolia.

Tea Tree Oil effectively kills resistant microorganisms – WESTPORT, June 13, 2000 (Reuters Health) – British and Australian researchers report in the May 2000, issue of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy that tea tree oil is effective in killing a variety of resistant microorganisms commonly found in hospitals,
Activity of Tea Tree Oil on Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Infection (Journal); 38: 67 69.
New methods for the control of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are required to reduce the *increasing incidence of nosocomial MRSA infections and the increasing reservoir of MRSA within the community which lead to increasing numbers of colonized patients and staff. This is further complicated by the recent emergence of S. aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (VRSA),’which will strain our resources in the near future.

Alternative approaches are thus required. Tea tree oil has been suggested as a possible topical agent with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties which could fulfill this role. It has been shown to be effective against clinical isolates of MRSA both in the UK and in Australia.

Lemongrass

A study carried out through Weber State University in Utah, the US, and published in 2008 found that of 91 essential oils tested, 78 showed inhibitory activity against the MRSA bacteria. Of these, the most effective was lemongrass.  MRSA is not an airborne pathogen — it spreads through physical contact. So if you are visiting or spending time in a hospital – rub some lemongrass on your hands and the soles of your feet. And if you do have a MRSA infection, apply lemongrass oil topically at the site of the infection.

How are Essential Oils used for infection support?

  • Direct skin application: Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Oil can be applied to skin cuts and scrapes as a preventative or on boils, abscesses, infected surgical sites and wounds as a treatment.
  • Nose: Apply Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Oil  inside the nose as a preventative or treatment for colonization with MRSA or Staph.
  • Internal: We do not suggest that you ingest essential oils without supervision from a trained aromatherapist.  However, Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Oil can be rubbed on the bottom of your feet and will then enter your bloodstream at low levels.
  • Bathing: Add Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Oil to your bath water or wound rinses.
  • Air diffused: When diffused, they have been proven to reduce bacteria in the air, including airborne MRSAand Staph aureus. Use several drops of Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Oil.
  • Lungs: Oils can also be diffused as part of a treatment for infections in the nose and lungs. Diffusing is an easy way to get oils into your lungs and into your body without ingesting them.
  • Cleaning: After washing your hand with soap and water – spray Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Spray directly on your hands and rub briskly.
  • Personal care products: Add a few drops of Tiny Drops Be Gone MRSA Oil to your favorite liquid soap to add a natural antibacterial to them (instead of relying on Triclosan or other chemical antibacterial agents. Be Gone MRSA Oil can also be added to shampoo and lotions.

Essential Oils and Cats – BE AWARE!

Stripe in the Pot Garden

Cats are VERY sensitive to poisoning from essential oils. Personally, I wouldn’t use them around cats and I have 11 rescue cats. These oils are safe for dogs, horses, goats and larger animals – but not safe for cats.

Of course, I use essential oils myself, but I don’t spray, diffuse or use any around my guys and gals.

My advice? Do not spray or use essential oils near your felines and never, never use them directly on your pet! Essential oils contain compounds that can cause feline liver damage.

Why? Because cats lack the liver enzyme (glucuronyl tranferase) that would allow them to break down these compounds. So it takes much longer for them to be eliminated from the cat’s system.

These substances can build up in the liver and become toxic. If the exposure is high then buildup can be dangerous and fast. This can cause toxicity and liver damage.

Because of this, many essential oils including citrus oils can be toxic to cats.

Lemon, orange, tangerine, mandarin, grapefruit, lime, bergamot, pine, spruce and fir, citronella, lavender, pennyroyal, rue and  teatree oils are high in oils that should be avoided by cats.

Linalool found in lavender and coriander is also toxic for the same reason, as is limonene and citronella. Linalool is extracted from citrus peel for flea control of premises. It should never be applied to a cat.

Phenols are also suspect and have been shown to be toxic to cats. Oregano, tarragon, savory cinnamon, clove and thyme oils all contain phenols.

Note that just because a product is natural, it is not necessarily safe. There are plenty of plants toxic to cats and humans. So beware of any supplier that claims a product is safe because it is natural.

Some Essential Oils are somewhat SAFER for cats.

These include Cedarwood, Peppermint, Rosemary, Catnip and should only be used when extremely diluted.

The bottom line on using essential oils on cats?

Don’t!

Essential Oil Safety for Babies and Children

cora-and-chris-hands

ALL essential oils should be diluted for use with babies and children. Dilute with a carrier oil such as sweet almond or coconut. A “carrier oil” is a type of base oil to slightly dilute the essential oil and protect the skin against direct contact with the essential oil.  Adding essential oils straight to bath water runs the risk of causing irritation to the skin not to mention accidental ingestion or contact with the eyes. Do not use essential oils in teething recipes. There are many applications for essential oils with babies and children, but they should be kept away from a child’s face. Essential oils should not be used in or around the nose in children.

Slowly introduce one essential oil at a time

When introducing essential oils to babies, it is important to introduce the oils one at a time and sparingly, to watch your baby for any sort of reaction and to allow your baby’s body to slowly become introduced to that essential oil. Do not introduce more than one essential oil in one day. If your baby is going to have a reaction to an essential oil they will likely show signs of a reaction in the first 15-30 minutes after inhalation or direct skin application.

What age is safe to use what oils?

It is not advised to use essential oils on babies less than 3 months of age because their skin is not mature yet and therefore more permeable and sensitive to essential oils. Unlike adults, newborns are also not as capable of dealing with adverse reactions to essential oils. Use more caution with premature babies, avoiding all essential oil use until they reach at least 3 months after their due date.

Essential oils safe for topical use/diffusion on babies 3+ months

The maximum recommended amount of essential oils used on babies 3+ months topically, should not exceed .2% of the recipe, or 1-2 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

  • Lavender

Essential oils safe for topical use/diffusion on babies 6+ months

The maximum recommended amount of essential oils used on babies 6+ months topically, should not exceed .5% of the recipe, or 3-5 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

  • Sweet Orange
  • Tea Tree

Essential oils safe for topical use/diffusion on children 2+ years

The maximum recommended amount of essential oils used on children 2+ years topically, should not exceed 2% of the recipe, or 20 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

  • Clove Bud
  • Frankincense
  • Lemongrass

Essential oils safe for topical use/diffusion on children 6+ years

The maximum recommended amount of essential oils used on children 6+ years topically, should not exceed 3% of the recipe, or 30 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

  • Peppermint

Essential oils safe for topical use/diffusion on children 10+ years

By this age, most of the essential oils are safe for topical use or diffusion for children, though you should always be sure to slowly introduce each oil individually to be sure that there are no adverse reactions or allergies.

Peppermint is safe to use at 6+ years but eucalyptus essential oil should be avoided until 10+ years of age. It’s important to note that the brand of essential oil you choose to use does not change this recommendation.

  • Eucalyptus

NAHA Safety Note for Peppermint Essential Oil:

– Avoid use on children under 30 months of age. The nasal mucosa is an autonomic reflexogen organ, which has a distance action to the heart, lungs and circulation and may lead to sudden apnoea and glottal constriction.- Direct application of peppermint oil to the nasal area or chest to infants should be avoided because of the risk of apnea, laryngeal and bronchial spasms, acute respiratory distress with cyanosis and respiratory arrest. Do not apply undiluted peppermint essential oils to the feet, particularly on infants and children under the age of 12.

– Inhalation of larges doses of menthol may lead to dizziness, confusion, muscle weakness, nausea and double vision.

If your child accidentally ingests some essential oils, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Call your general practitioner unless signs of poisoning are present, then you should immediately bring your child and the bottle that was consumed, to the nearest emergency room.

Common Baby Issues and Solutions:

Calming: Dilute Lavender and apply to the feet and on your chest if you are holding them to promote relaxation. You can wipe extra on their blanket/clothes. Diffusing with a diffuser is also very helpful.

Digestive support : Dilute 1 drop each of Lavender and Sweet Orange in 2 Tablespoons of carrier oil and rub baby’s tummy in a clockwise direction for at least 30 seconds for digestive support. Apply every 15-30 minutes until their tummy is settled.

Minor cuts and scrapes: Frankincense promotes a healthy inflammatory response so its a great choice as a child learns to scoot, crawl and walk.

Teething: Use diluted Lavender along the jawline as often as every 15-30 minutes to soothe.

Ears: Dilute Lavender and Tea Tree and apply around the ear (never put oils IN the ear) frequently, massaging down towards the lymph nodes to encourage healthy drainage.

Respiratory support: Dilute Tea Tree and Lemongrass and apply to the chest, back and feet several times an hour. A combination of Frankincense and Lavender can also be used for stubborn respiratory issues.

Diaper Time: Dilute 1 drop of each of Lavender and Tea Tree in coconut oil or sweet almond to soothe the skin. Apply each time you change their diaper. You can use a glass spray bottle for this. Use damp, soft paper towels to wipe or better than that – make your own.

Boost Immune Function

EO Euc nb EO Tea Tree nb Eo Pep nb

Essential oils can actually attack invading viruses or they can address the circumstances that lead to a depressed immune system. Essential oils minimize symptoms of a cold, can prevent secondary infections, and in general, support the body’s ability to prevent infectious disease. Unlike the use of antibiotics, applying essential oils before, during, or after an infection, leaves the body in an improved state of health with increased ability to fight off future afflictions. Begin using a few drops every day.

To treat an upper respiratory cold – Boil two cups of water, pour into a ceramic bowl, and add 1 drop Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), 1 drop of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), and 1 drop of Peppermint (Mentha x piperita). Cover your head and bowl with a towel, breathing deeply for 5 minutes. If it hurts, you know the oils are attacking infected cells.

Circulation

EO Euc nb EO Lavender nb

Essential oils used for poor circulation will stimulate blood flow in the veins, lymph movement in the lymphatic system and help shift the toxin build up throughout your body.

Dilute lavender essential oil in almond or coconut oil and massage into legs, feet, arms, or hands.

Or add a few drops of eucalyptus by itself or combined with lavender in almond or coconut oil and massage into legs, feet, arms, or hands.

How to LAYER essential oils for muscle pain

Eo Pep nb EO Orange nb EO Frank nb

Here is an example of how to layer essential oils.

Do you have sore muscles, bones or joints? Body aches, back aches, leg cramps?

Create your own Icy Hot pain reliever with these 3 essential oils. Peppermint – Sweet Orange – Frankincense.

This combination of oils create cooling and warming sensations that divert attention from the actual pain and help block the pain signals being sent to your brain.

Layer these 3 oils about 30 seconds apart. Use neat (straight from the bottle undiluted) unless you have sensitive skin. If you are sensitive, dilute with one of our carrier oils such as Sweet Almond or Coconut Oil.

How to Layer:

Use Peppermint essential oil first. Peppermint is a stimulant and gives a cooling sensation.

Next, use Sweet Orange. This is a warming oil that has anti-inflammatory properties.

Finally, use Frankincense. This oil is mildly sedative and reduces inflammation.

When through – add a  squirt of Sweet Almond or Coconut Oil to your hands to dilute and blend off of your fingers.
